From the end of the lockdown, Italian market of Tehcnical Consumer Goods (TCG) has been recording a new positive period. According to GfK, the last week of May saw a value increase of 35.6% compared to the same period of the last year, with positive trends both for on-line and off-line channels. With a turnover of about 200 million euros, it was the week with the highest value since the beginning of the year.
All the most important products are growing, with an increase of 25% for TV and Smartphone sales.
In the recent weeks the market has at least partially recovered the losses recorded during the eight weeks of lockdown, although it has not yet reversed the trend for 2020. In particular, the four weeks following the start of Phase 2 – from Monday 4 May on Sunday 31 May – recorded a double-digit growth, for a total of +25% compared to the same period of 2019. Since the beginning of the year (Week 1- Week 22) the Retail Panel Weekly perimeter has registered a -2.5 % to total.
The recovery in sales affects all channels: in the last week of May, in fact, the on-line channel recorded a growth of +86% in value, but also in traditional stores the result is very positive: +26% compared to the same period of 2019.
On a territorial level, the week from 25 to 31 May 2020 was positive for sales in physical stores all Italian macro regions. Lombardy recorded a +33% in value compared to last year and returns to being the most important region.
Another very positive sign is the strong growth of all the most important Tech products by turnover.
The positive trend of the IT and Office sector continues, due to the new Italian Smart Working habits and Distance Learning: portable PCs grow by +105%, tablets by + 46% and multifunction printers by +78.5 %.
The main products of the Large Appliance sector were also positive, with growth of +12% for washing machines and +57% for refrigerators. Compared to the same week of 2019 there were positive performances also for Small Appliances: coffee machines recorded a + 33% while vacuum cleaners increased sales by + 64% in value.
Also due to the approach of Summer, the Air Conditioning sector also recorded a growth (+28%) while the Air Treatment category (+130%) is confirmed as a very popular category, which had seen very positive results also during the lockdown.
