The German market of technical consumer goods started the year with a small growth of +0,2 percent. According to GfK Temax data, small domestic appliances, office devices and consumables and IT were positive, while telecom and consumer electronics/photo declined. Innovative product categories such as wearables, driven by Smartwatches, compact system cameras as well as Gaming-Monitors, and in the market for household appliances large capacity washing machines, dishwashers, espresso machines and hairstyling and epilation devices were helping the total market to grow slightly. Turnover with the most important category TV was stable compared to Q1/2019 and showed solid growth in units.
The Major Domestic Appliances market shows a growth in terms of sales units and value. Dishwashers continue to show high level growth with positive impact coming from built in devices; as well as appliances with a water consumption of > 8 ≤ 9 liters. Washing machines grew as well, especially models with > 8kg loading capacity, together with washer dryers. Tumble dryers and hoods are the only product groups in Q1/2019, which showed negative growth (for units and value).
Although tumble dryers usually enjoy a positive impact of the winter season, they could not profit from this effect this time and have been continuing the poor result from 2018.
Small domestic appliances market starts with a rise in revenue for the first quarter. Vacuum Cleaners continue to drive the market thanks to ongoing trend for re-chargeable handsticks and robots. An other growing sector in Q1 is personal care with positive growth rates in value for shavers, hairdryers and hairstylers. Irons, instead, show a continuous fall and a drop in revenue growth was recognized for food preparation too.
